Sentenced to death: Afghan who dared to read about women’s rights

Another horrifying story from post-Taliban Afghanistan is in news. 23-year-old young man, a student of journalism, is sentenced to death by an Islamic court in Afghanistan for downloading a pro-woman report from the internet. The website from where the report was downloaded allegedly stated that Muslim fundamentalists had misrepresented the views of the prophet Mohamed by claiming that the Koran justified the oppression of women.

Sayed Pervez Kambaksh had distributed the article to fellow students and teachers at Balkh University to provoke a debate on the matter. But a complaint was made against him and he was arrested, tried by religious judges without being allowed legal representation and sentenced to death. Afghan government has withdrawn the death sentence in the wake of widespread international protests and appeals to the President, Hamid Karzai, after the case was media. You can also sign the petition to save to Sayed Pervez Kambaksh from unfair conviction and condemnation. About 38, 000 people have already signed it, this is said to be one of reasons for government’s withdrawal of death penalty.
